Roguelike RPG Touhou Genso Wanderer Arrives February 7

Call me crazy, but I think Touhou is about to take the Western world by storm, dood! Some of you got a taste with our recent release of Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, but you'll be able to get a whole lot more when Touhou Genso Wanderer launches on PS4 (physical and digital) and PS Vita (digital only) on February 7! As an added bonus, we're also going to include a free copy of Touhou Double Focus, a 2D platformer starring Aya, on its own disc in the launch day edition of the game.

Yup, that's right, if you pre-order the game to make sure you get the launch day edition for PS4, not only will you be getting Touhou Genso Wanderer, but you'll also get Touhou Double Focus, a reversible cover, and a mini-art book!

Okay, now let me back up a second. For the uninitiated, a deep dive into the world of Touhou is a wild and crazy ride that could take you weeks to emerge from, but you can get a quick primer in my last Touhou related post. Up to speed? Okay, good because Touhou Genso Wanderer takes the bullet-hell world of the Touhou Project in a new direction as it wraps Reimu and her pals in the trappings of a roguelike RPG.

If you're anything like me, I'm sure you're licking your lips at the thought of challenging random dungeons, enemies, and traps in search of the best loot in Gensokyo. You'll want to temper that enthusiasm with a touch of patience and strategy though, because despite its charming outer skin and fun story, Touhou Genso Wanderer is a roguelike worthy of the name.

While setting out into randomly generated dungeons on your quest to resolve the latest incident in Gensokyo, you'll need to take care - dying in the dungeon will result in not only the shame of death, but also the loss of all the items you're carrying. Of course, that's not always a bad thing, as losing your favorite weapon could just make you experiment with one of the hundreds of other unique items in Gensokyo, or force you to spend a little time crafting a new favorite in the item fusion system.

The item fusion system lets you make use of the myriad items that you'll pick up in your quests into the dungeons of Gensokyo, instead of just trashing them all. You'll also be taking a pal into the dungeon for each adventure. With six partner characters to choose from, I'm sure you'll be able to find a favorite no matter what your playstyle is!

To find out more about all the systems in Touhou Genso Wanderer, visit the game's official website, and don't forget to pre-order the launch edition if you want to snag a free bonus copy of Touhou Double Focus!

Alrighty, now I'm off to get to the bottom of this latest incident before the rest of you get a chance to on February 7. Catch you in the comments, dood!

Hiker discovers an abandoned town inside Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Sometimes it's easy to take for granted how much land there is in America. Sure, it's harder and harder to find places that haven't been explored, but it's also become easier to forget places that we've already been. Kind of like the entire friggin' town in the middle of Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

That's exactly what Jordan Liles discovered when he explored the park last year, and lucky for us, he brought along his camera to document the entire adventure. It makes for a great watch.

From his website:

About a mile up an unnamed gravel road inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the back way into an abandoned neighborhood and hotel, some of which was originally constructed more than 100 years ago. In the fully edited film below, Tennessee Wonderland, I explore the houses and the remains of what was once referred to as the Wonderland Club. I've applied color correction, balanced audio levels, cut everything down to the essentials without sacrificing interesting moments and most importantly, I made sure to place importance on including a proper ending.

Check out his video below and start planning your own trip to the abandoned town of Elkmont. It might just inspire you to go exploring and see what might have been forgotten in your own neck of the woods, like the incredible Cisco, Utah Ghost Town, the abandoned town of Chloride in Arizona, or California's long-dead Bodie

Interestingly enough, earlier this year on 2014 America Adventure Rally, the Roadtrippers team stumbled onto a whole other set of abandoned buildings just a few miles from Tennessee Wonderland. What we'd actually discovered was the Elkmont Historic District, an abandoned town that's just outside of the still-active Elkmont Campground. It's the perfect place to pitch a tent and go for a midnight flashlight adventure. Click the image below for the full story.

In case checking out the remains of an abandoned town wasn't cool enough, get this - just last year, a guy with a personal drone went out and documented his own bizarre find: an abandoned renaissance fair deep in the Virginia forest. Click on the image below to jump over and check out his own video adventure to another of America's coolest forgotten places.

Spring blooms at the Palazzo & Bellagio

It’s kind of hard to tell which season it is when Vegas is always warm and sunny. Thankfully, the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium and the Bellagio Conservatory never fail to remind us with their seasonal displays. In a town that isn’t really fit to grow tomatoes, they manage to cultivate whatever the heck they want. And right now, it’s pretty pastels to celebrate spring.

Settling on rich, cool tones, the Palazzo Waterfall Atrium spent nearly a year creating 38 iridescent butterflies. They’re suspended from the domed ceiling and perched throughout the installation with wing spans ranging from four to 10 feet wide. Inspired by the morpho species, each purple and blue butterfly was designed and created to emulate stained glass.

The centerpiece of the display is the water garden with three bearded irises ranging from 10 to 15 feet tall. Each of the six petals are five feet in diameter and flanked by hydrangeas, spider mums, orchids, ferns and more. Twenty-three artists and artisans from all over the country collaborated on the design and construction, which consists of more than 2,000 plants and flowers.

The Palazzo’s spring floral exhibit is free and open to the public 24 hours a day, and will be on display until June 5.

Continuing with a Japanese spring theme, the Bellagio Conservatory decided on warm and vibrant pastels to celebrate the season. Pink and purple tulips and hyacinth, yellow daffodils, cherry blossoms and more cover every square inch of the gardens, 82,830 flowers in all. This year, they’ve added large iron cages filled with tiny chirping birds whose singing reverberates throughout the conservatory space.

There is a deep symbolization in the materials used throughout the garden, all representing natural elements and aiming to bring good luck and prosperity to those who visit. Bamboo canes used in the display are 10-feet-tall and four inches round, serving multiple structural purposes as well as a splattering water feature.

The centerpiece in the west bed is the massive twisting tree that guests can walk through to get a closer look at the koi pond, bird cages and fresh-cut floral animals. It took the Bellagio’s horticulture team hours to create the floral crane and turtle using 15,000 fresh stems. The Bellagio’s spring floral exhibit will be up until May 14 and is free to the public 24 hours a day.

Make sure to visit these limited-time displays and check out more Vegas attractions.

Mandarin Oriental Spa in Las Vegas offers sunshine, yoga and so much more

mandarin-oriental-hammam-relaxation-room

Looks like we can steal some decorating tips from the spa at Mandarin Oriental. Here you’ll find 1930s Shanghai-inspired artwork throughout the gorgeous facility. All photos coutesy of Mandarin Oriental.

Heading to the spa? It should be a refreshing experience. You shouldn’t feel like you’re trapped in a dark cave. We get that it’s one way  to escape and relax, but you want to feel rejuvenated too. Plus, dim lighting and dark corners sound more like elements of a scary movie than a spa day. So we need light. Lots of it.

That’s why we love the award-winning Forbes Five-Star spa at Mandarin Oriental. Measuring more than 25,000 square feet, this two-level spa offers natural lighting from its multiple floor-to-ceiling windows. Whether you’re lounging in the relaxation area, unwinding during a spa treatment or breaking a sweat during a yoga session, the sunlight greets you everywhere.

This is just one of the reasons we’re so in love with this Las Vegas spa. See why we dream of staying here all day, every day.

mandarin-oriental-tepidarium-chairs

You can work on your tan. We’ll work on our sleep… right after we sip our herbal tea. These heated loungers will change your life.

There’s natural daylight everywhere. Why, hellooo daylight. We know, we know. We just talked about the spa’s natural lighting. But obviously it left such a lasting impression on us. This is such a treat, especially when you’re visiting Vegas. Whether you’re getting a Chinese foot spa treatment, enjoying a couple’s massage or falling asleep on one of the Tepidarium (heated) loungers, the sun does wonders for your mood. You’ll always want to go to a spa with natural lighting from now on. Plus, when we reach our 100-degree summer weather, you get to soak up the sun, all without getting scorched by it.

mandarin-oriental-vitality-pool

Pack your swimsuit and take a dip in the spa’s vitality pool any time of the year.

The women’s and men’s relaxation rooms are the business. Or the bee’s knees. However you want to classify it, they’re amazing. We’re crazy about the vitality pools, which are right in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows. We love the pool club scene, but here you can take a dip year round without being too hot. Plus, you get to sip on delicious fruit and veggie-infused water, like cucumber and watermelon. Talk about refreshing!

mandarin-oriental-hammam

We’re ready for our hammam session. We love the starry ceiling.

The hammam is so dreamy. Star light, star bright: If you’re coming with your sweetie, make sure you check this out. Located in the co-ed relaxation area, the hammam is a Turkish-style steam bath you’ll experience right before a treatment. This spa’s hammam comes with lounge-style seating and includes a full-body exfoliation on the heated marble table located in the center of the room. Plus, the starry ceiling sure beats camping in our book.

mandarin-oriental-spa-room

What’s better than experiencing the best spa treatment? Taking someone with you, of course.

The couple’s rooms heighten the experience. The rooms are a real beauty (cue whistle). And we tested it — the beds are so close together, you can reach out and give each other a hand squeeze during your massages. Each couple’s room comes with its own private shower and steam room. If you’re planning a night out in town, this is a fabulous way to start it. We also love how this spa has a co-ed relaxation room; many spas only have gender-specific ones. With this amenity, you get to be with your honey from start to finish.

mandarin-oriental-oils

This spa uses all natural and organic treatments.

The treatments restore your soul. We’re certain you’ve read that in just about every spa brochure, but the Mandarin Oriental spa truly caters to your needs. Do you ever have those days where you’re just feeling… off? (Sounds like every day to us!) This spa provides you with a questionnaire that will help therapists make the most of your service and get you back where you need to be.

One popular spa “journey” is the East Meets West ritual. It combines both Eastern and Western practices with deep tissue techniques and Thai massage movements. The herbal massage also relieves your tight muscles. The one-hour, 50-minute massage starts at $280.

Another popular service is the Chinese foot spa, a popular ritual in the Far East. The 45-minute service includes an herbal foot bath, foot mask, as well as neck and shoulder massage. Other fun perks include a heated herbal neck wrap and fresh tea.

mandarin-oriental-fitness-and-wellness-center

Now THIS is what we call a yoga studio.

This spa has a way cool yoga studio. You’ll be wanting to namaste (emphasis on “stay”) here until the next century. You can do yoga and also Pilates and kinesis training. It’s $35 for non-hotel guests and free if you’re staying at the hotel. Class sizes are limited, so reservations are recommended. Private sessions, as well as a fitness gym, are also available.

Mandarin Oriental also received a Five-Star award for its resort and signature restaurant, Twist by Pierre Gagnaire. There are only nine properties worldwide that received a triple Five-Star award, with Mandarin Oriental the only property in Las Vegas. Additionally, its prime location makes it easy to access Aria, Vdara and other hotels in the heart of the Strip.

Why you should cruise the backroads in classic style with a vintage RV camper

Modern RVs are jam packed full of high-tech features and luxurious accommodations for riders to enjoy. There's no arguing that they're beautiful machines and a great way to experience the open road. However, RVs have been around for a long time, and some of the vintage RV campers of years past still look great today. They may not have a flat screen TV that rises out of a counter top like something out of Star Trek, but their understated classic styling still offers relaxation and fun while driving to a summer camping destination.

If you are in the market for a new way to camp and are budget-minded, you may want to consider a vintage RV camper. They will generally go easier on your wallet and bank account, and will also turn some heads at every RV park or campsite you visit.

Vintage RV campers are also great for anyone who enjoys DIY and restoration projects. Buying a rundown old camper and putting extra time and work into restoring it, so you can make it exactly into what you want is a great way to get some extra satisfaction when you go camping in your vintage camper. So don't necessarily let that musty or rundown old camper for sale go unnoticed. It could just be exactly what you are looking for underneath that rough exterior!

While a vintage RV camper would often never be described as 'spacious' or 'luxurious,' they definitely fit the billing as both quaint and cozy. Instead of feeling like you are sleeping in a hotel (or motel in some cases) room on wheels, vintage RV campers will give you more of as authentic camping experience. The nostalgia factor will also kick in if you ever spent any of your childhood camping with the family in your dad's old Airstream or Shasta camper.

If you don't want to tow your vintage RV camper or simply don't have a vehicle capable of performing such a feat (it might actually be an unwritten rule that you can't tow a vintage camper without an old wood-sided station wagon), then an old VW bus might be perfect for you. While perhaps not technically a camper, the VW bus actually makes for a pretty great camping vehicle. A VW bus, a couple lawn chairs, a campfire and good company can make for a very memorable evening.

Vintage RV campers might be overshadowed by their modern cousins, but still hold a lot of camping value for a lot of people. Check out your local classifieds and see what is available in your area. Your next camping vehicle might be just around the corner!

“Brain training” with Lumosity — does it really work?

Imagine if you could improve your memory, attention, and problem solving skills in all aspects of your life — just by playing some simple “brain training” games online or on an app. Games that could help prevent age-related memory decline, including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Games that could help you at work, school, or with everyday tasks — like remembering where you left your keys, or quickly recalling the name of a person you just met.

That’s just what Lumosity claimed its games could do, based on “proven neuroscience research.” But the FTC charged that there isn’t solid science showing that Lumosity’s “brain training” games work the way they say they would.
