Roguelike RPG Touhou Genso Wanderer Arrives February 7

Call me crazy, but I think Touhou is about to take the Western world by storm, dood! Some of you got a taste with our recent release of Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, but you'll be able to get a whole lot more when Touhou Genso Wanderer launches on PS4 (physical and digital) and PS Vita (digital only) on February 7! As an added bonus, we're also going to include a free copy of Touhou Double Focus, a 2D platformer starring Aya, on its own disc in the launch day edition of the game.

Yup, that's right, if you pre-order the game to make sure you get the launch day edition for PS4, not only will you be getting Touhou Genso Wanderer, but you'll also get Touhou Double Focus, a reversible cover, and a mini-art book!

Okay, now let me back up a second. For the uninitiated, a deep dive into the world of Touhou is a wild and crazy ride that could take you weeks to emerge from, but you can get a quick primer in my last Touhou related post. Up to speed? Okay, good because Touhou Genso Wanderer takes the bullet-hell world of the Touhou Project in a new direction as it wraps Reimu and her pals in the trappings of a roguelike RPG.

If you're anything like me, I'm sure you're licking your lips at the thought of challenging random dungeons, enemies, and traps in search of the best loot in Gensokyo. You'll want to temper that enthusiasm with a touch of patience and strategy though, because despite its charming outer skin and fun story, Touhou Genso Wanderer is a roguelike worthy of the name.

While setting out into randomly generated dungeons on your quest to resolve the latest incident in Gensokyo, you'll need to take care - dying in the dungeon will result in not only the shame of death, but also the loss of all the items you're carrying. Of course, that's not always a bad thing, as losing your favorite weapon could just make you experiment with one of the hundreds of other unique items in Gensokyo, or force you to spend a little time crafting a new favorite in the item fusion system.

The item fusion system lets you make use of the myriad items that you'll pick up in your quests into the dungeons of Gensokyo, instead of just trashing them all. You'll also be taking a pal into the dungeon for each adventure. With six partner characters to choose from, I'm sure you'll be able to find a favorite no matter what your playstyle is!

To find out more about all the systems in Touhou Genso Wanderer, visit the game's official website, and don't forget to pre-order the launch edition if you want to snag a free bonus copy of Touhou Double Focus!

Alrighty, now I'm off to get to the bottom of this latest incident before the rest of you get a chance to on February 7. Catch you in the comments, dood!

Hiker discovers an abandoned town inside Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Sometimes it's easy to take for granted how much land there is in America. Sure, it's harder and harder to find places that haven't been explored, but it's also become easier to forget places that we've already been. Kind of like the entire friggin' town in the middle of Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

That's exactly what Jordan Liles discovered when he explored the park last year, and lucky for us, he brought along his camera to document the entire adventure. It makes for a great watch.

From his website:

About a mile up an unnamed gravel road inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the back way into an abandoned neighborhood and hotel, some of which was originally constructed more than 100 years ago. In the fully edited film below, Tennessee Wonderland, I explore the houses and the remains of what was once referred to as the Wonderland Club. I've applied color correction, balanced audio levels, cut everything down to the essentials without sacrificing interesting moments and most importantly, I made sure to place importance on including a proper ending.

Check out his video below and start planning your own trip to the abandoned town of Elkmont. It might just inspire you to go exploring and see what might have been forgotten in your own neck of the woods, like the incredible Cisco, Utah Ghost Town, the abandoned town of Chloride in Arizona, or California's long-dead Bodie

Interestingly enough, earlier this year on 2014 America Adventure Rally, the Roadtrippers team stumbled onto a whole other set of abandoned buildings just a few miles from Tennessee Wonderland. What we'd actually discovered was the Elkmont Historic District, an abandoned town that's just outside of the still-active Elkmont Campground. It's the perfect place to pitch a tent and go for a midnight flashlight adventure. Click the image below for the full story.

In case checking out the remains of an abandoned town wasn't cool enough, get this - just last year, a guy with a personal drone went out and documented his own bizarre find: an abandoned renaissance fair deep in the Virginia forest. Click on the image below to jump over and check out his own video adventure to another of America's coolest forgotten places.
